Q: What Is Nia®?

A: Nia® is a cardiovascular program that uses whole-body, expressive, grounded movement, rather than repetitive jogging or lifting. nia® integrates your mind/body/spirit and leaves you feeling recharged, rejuvenated, and fully alive. Nia® blends the dance arts, martial arts, and healing arts (including yoga) to allow your dancer, athlete, warrior, and child within to expressively emerge. Nia® is a completely unique fitness program that tones and trims the body through pleasure, not pain. Nia® is kind to the joints, it is usually done barefoot. www.nianow.com top

Q: What should I wear when I attend a Nia® class?

A: Wear cool, loose fitting clothing - anything that is comfortable and allows you to feel wonderful, and does not restrict your movement. I like to wear long shirts or tops that cover the booty and chest. Most people choose to go barefoot during a Nia® class. Nia® is about sensing and connecting. Going barefoot enables your feet to connect directly with the earth, making an amazing connection. This connection allows the 7,000 nerve endings located in your feet to sense the ground and send information back to your brain. This enables your body to effectively compensate and adapt. A soft sole dance shoe is acceptable. top

Q: What do I need to bring with me when I attend a Nia® class?

A: All students are asked to bring water. It's important that you not only continuously hydrate during class but before and after class as well. Students may bring a yoga mat. We will be getting on the floor as we stretch and move to Floorplay (Art of Play) at the end of class. top

Q: What is Floorplay (Art of Play)?

A:The Nia® Workout on the Floor!
In Nia® Floorplay (Art of Play), we use the floor to stimulate our bodies. Using gravity, space, time, and sound, we use the art of moving on the floor to become strong, stretched, defined, balanced, and fit. It is the balance between stillness and movement that gives Floorplay (Art of Play) its power and offers you results, without the usual strain and boredom associated with conventional floor work. top

Q: Do I need any prior dance arts, martial arts, or healing arts experience?

A: No prior experience is needed. People of all ages, from all walks of life and with varied interests participate in nia®. People who love to move and are passionate about change, people who desire a conscious, artistic, fun, expressive and pleasurable way to get fit, and people who are choosing to heal and to personally grow are drawn to Nia. top

Q: Do I need to be in shape?

A: No prior training is necessary - Everyone is welcome. Nia® is practiced by people of all ages and fitness levels. Nia® movements are adaptable to allow you to address your body's uniqueness, and support your body in shifting from its known way of functioning to the high organic functioning that is The Body's Way. Regardless of how you have lived in, or treated your body, you can feel better, get fit, and find health with The Body's Way. top

Q: What do you mean when you use the term, "The Body's Way?"

A: The Body's Way refers to the way of moving that is in accord with the body's own structural design. The Body's Way is the specific design and structure of the body, which dictates its proper use. You will learn more as you grow in your Nia® practice. top

Q: What benefits can I expect if I choose to try Nia®?

A: Traditional benefits of Nia® include cardiovascular conditioning, flexibility, strength, balance, endurance and relaxation. Nia® stimulates, motivates, and educates you about your body. It increases the pleasure of living in your body, and teaches you to be more joyful and expressive. While working out you actually learn to self-heal parts of yourself and your body so you can reach the fullest potential you desire. Nia® is guided by the Pleasure Principle - if the body feels good, accepted and loved, it will naturally become stronger and you may even begin to notice that you feel better. There is NO PAIN - just ALL GAIN! top
